Ok, so this first picture is from day 2, but it seemed a fitting start to the Glacier posts.
First, take a look at all of this luggage! It looks excessive, but when you realize that there is one (only 1) large suitcase for me for essentially a 10 week move, a medium size for Justin for a 2 week trip, a large box of camping gear, a small box of office/books for Nicole to work on over the summer and then a bunch of other random things including all of our food for a 48 hr camping trip and snacks from the additional 50+ hours of train riding and pillows for sleeping and it doesn’t seem so bad. Still, it was borderline embarrassing each time we had to haul it in public.
Back on topic. What a beautiful park! While the weather looked sketchy upon arrival, we weren’t in the park but a few minutes when we spotted our first black bear on the way to Two Medicine. It was literally sitting just a few feet off the road!

We went and set up our tent with the weather getting worse all the time. It seemed to be coming in waves down the canyons but dissapating as it arrived on the high plains, so we thought we would try to hike up to Grinnel glacier that was about a 4-5 mile hike from our tent. But the weather was getting worse and worse… it was starting to snow quite a bit and we were getting pretty wet. So we turned around and went back to make dinner.
One of our neighbors at the campground invited us to his fire. It was nice to warm up and he, having been there for the past week, was a wealth of information. He let us know that the Grinnel trail was closed, the Going to the Sun road was closed, and helped us plan the next day. So, no glacier trips were planned for the next day, but we were confident we had a nice hike planned for the next day.
