In keeping with the spring theme, but on a day where it was actually really rainy in early March, I got the bright idea to make a Spring themed sensory table for Martin. For those of you less in the toddler/preschool stage, its kind of like an indoor sandbox. You create a 2-4 inch thick spread of tactile objects like sand, water if you are brave or doing it outside, rice, beans, whatever and let them go to town with cups and spoons, etc. I made mine up of split peas, several types/sizes of dried green beans, and some spinach pastas (all from the bulk isle) in a big rectangle Tupperware container on the coffee table. We then hid Annie's cheddar bunnies (think gold fish, but instead bunnies) in the "green plants" with the instruction for Martin to find the bunnies. It was an immediate hit.
Now, I'm not an idiot. I was fully prepared for some of the stuff to end up on the floor. What I was not prepared for, however, was my little boy to POUR OVER HIS HEAD cups full while I was making lunch. When I asked him why he was doing that, he declared "I like how it feels!"
Uh-huh. Sensory table indeed.
I am still picking up stupid green beans and split peas all over the house and haven't dared bring out the container again. But that doesn't mean you all can't enjoy a few pictures taken before the head sensory part began!
